How to Make the Most of Your Under-Stair Storage

16 July 2018

Finding innovative ways to use unwanted space in your home can be a challenge. Plus, often in homes, you can usually find yourself wishing that you had a couple of additional cupboards for all of your belongings that you’ve picked up along the way! The internet is full of storage solutions; whether it’s organisation tips for your fridge or how to make the most out of your airing cupboard, there are a plethora of guidebooks to help you out. However, a space that frequently goes ignored can prove to be one of the most useful storage methods out there.

Under-stair storage comes in a variety of different formats. Traditionally found in older buildings, it uses up the space created under each step into a typically triangular shaped area. There are a vast number of ways in which people use this space, from a place to keep shoes to a miscellaneous collection of items, due to the awkward angle it can sometimes prove challenging to find a particular use for it.

Here at WoodenStairs, we aim to help create functional uses out of your under-stair space. With more flexibility than you may have first imagined, we have worked on many projects creating a variety of customised storage solution. . So, we’ve compiled a list of ingenious ways in which you can start using this area today.

A Seating Area

If you’re looking to achieve a specific ambience in your hallway, approaching the subject of transforming your under-stair space can be met with some trepidation. However, this needn’t be the case! One of the most attractive ways in which you can have an impact on your hallway is by creating a reading nook out of the carved-out area. Installing some bookcases onto the back wall allows you to have that storage element to your creation, and the placement of a bench slotted beneath them gives you somewhere to enjoy them.

Cleaning Essentials

No matter where you decide to house your cleaning supplies, the chances are that there is never enough room for it all. This is an area that we often leave unorganised due to a lack of space perhaps a dedicated box in the bathroom or under the sink in the kitchen. If you’re looking for a way to make the most out of your under-stair storage, installing many shelves is a quick and effective way to manage your cleaning supplies. Carve out a shelf for surface cleaners and sprays, with baskets placed on a shelf below where you can quickly access clothes and wipes.

A Toilet

If you’ve chosen a large, grand staircase, you may find that the area you have is considerably larger than you first expected. Having a downstairs toilet is something that can come in extremely useful, especially if your only current option is upstairs. For this, you’ll need to look at bringing in a plumber to check the water connection aspect of such arrangement, but also you’ll need an in-depth review of your stair design and construction,  to verify that the structure of the staircase can accommodate  this. The key point, especially when Wooden Stairs are concerned, is to remember that water and moisture can affect the timbers negatively. Whilst having a toiled underneath the stairs can be a great solution, having a shower or a steam room is strongly not advised!

A Larder

Typically found in older homes, a larder was used to keep kitchen cupboard essentials. Although some homes have an abundance of space within their kitchen for items such as flour and tinned goods, a larder makes good use of your under-stair space. Much like with a cleaning closet, one of the most effective ways to go about this is through the addition of shelves. This way, you can quickly view what you have on offer, with every item being easy to reach. The important consideration for you is the stair location and therefore the usual temperature of the under-stair area.

A Utility Room

Sometimes, finding space for your washing machine and tumble dryer can prove to be a difficult task. If your home is without a utility room, you can be left wondering where the best place is to put these vital items. Regarding storage solutions, hollowing out space under your stairs may leave you with enough room for an ingenious solution. Place the white goods side by side and say goodbye to them cluttering up valuable space in other rooms. Don’t forget to consult your plumber to work out the outlet points for the water, heat and steam, so that the stairs above your white goods are not affected.

A TV Nook

Not all staircases are in hallways. In fact, a large number of stairs within homes can be found in the living area. These can sometimes appear to be a bit of an eyesore – if they are in need of being updated, you may also feel as though there is nothing that you can do with them. However, this is not the case. Installing your favourite television into the side of the stairs removes the need for bulky TV stands and the dangers of self-installing wall fixtures. Having the television flush with the side of the stairs not only eliminates the need for additional clutter but also looks attractive and streamline.
