The carpets have been fitted yesterday and today and the carpet fitter confirmed what Sarah and I have been thinking over the last few days - the stairs are so nice that it seems a shame to cover them up with carpet! We've chosen to leave them in all their glory - the carpet fitter said that he sees a lot of houses and the quality and finish is fantastic. We're going to live with it and might consider a stair runner at a later date but we are so happy with the result that we are leaving them alone :-)
Thank you for all your time, advice and patience. As you might expect, friends, work colleagues and casual acquaintances are keen to ask about the project and for advice in their own building work. If any of their projects include a new staircase we will have no hesitation in recommending you.
